Closing the loop

The circular “take-make-consume-reuse-recycle-recover” economy implies that we recover the materials and energy from discarded products. When a product reaches the end of its life, materials and energy are kept within the economy, so that they can be used again and again, thereby creating further value.

We work to cut greenhouse gases and raise energy efficiency internally and together with our partners. By advancing best practice and low-carbon solutions among suppliers and owners, we reduce environmental impact across the value chain. Our long-term strategy for cleaner shipping and better data transparency helps drive a more sustainable transport sector.

Social responsibility in the value chain

EFO safeguards labor rights and improves working conditions, health and safety across the supply chain. We use risk-based due diligence to assess suppliers and ensure compliance with our Supplier Code of Conduct through independent audits.

Responsibility

In 2019, we co-founded The Responsible Shipping Initiative together with some of Sweden´s largest charterers of dry cargo vessels; Södra Skogsägarna, Lantmännen, SSAB, Billerud Korsnäs and Stockholm Exergi. The purpose is to secure the quality, increase the standard of the vessels and working conditions onboard the large number of ships that daily sail in the Baltic sea, carrying goods to our members. Through our initiative, we can improve standards and share all the information we gain through our own collective audits and inspections, that we carry out.

Steady improvement in RSI inspections, 2020–2024

In 2024 we reached an average 91.3% inspection score—our best to date – while findings per vessel fell from 18.3 (2022) to 12.0 (2024). The results demonstrate RSI is raising onboard safety and environmental standards, as well as fostering constructive supply-chain dialogue.

Governance

EFO’s governance is characterized by integrity and systematic risk management, guided by established policies and procedures that promote ethical and sustainable business throughout the value chain. The company has adopted two Codes of Conduct that clarify expectations for ethical conduct both within EFO and in the supply chain. This is particularly important in the waste, logistics and energy sectors, where the risks of misconduct and corruption are higher.

EFO maintains regular communication with its suppliers and emphasizes long-term business relationships. Independent audits of suppliers are carried out to ensure compliance with the Code of Conduct. This approach is part of EFO’s ambition to be a positive force in the industry that, over time, can contribute to improved standards in the waste and transport industries.

EFO also works systematically to identify and manage sustainability-related risks in the value chain—both actual and potential. The work focuses in particular on preventing adverse impacts and integrating sustainability risks into both enterprise risk management and strategic decision-making.

This approach strengthens responsible business, builds trust among stakeholders, and increases our organization’s long-term resilience.
